Tomato Saar or Maharashtrian Tomato Soup

Tomato Saar (टोमॅटोच सार) is one of my childhood favourites. Whenever I would be at my gran's place for lunch, this is what I would have! I relish tomato saar with steamed rice while everybody else in my family enjoys it with poli. Although we're divided on the accompaniment front, we all agree that the saar is simply delicious !

Serves 3

Recipe for Tomato Saar:

Ingredients:

Tomatoes500 gms
Ginger1.5 cm piece
Garlic5 Cloves
Green Chilli1
SaltTo Taste(~1 tsp)
Water1+1/2 to 2 cups
Coconut Milk100 ml
Oil/Ghee1 tsp
Cumin Seeds1/2 tsp
Asafoetida1/2 tsp
Curry LeavesA few

How to make Tomato Saar:

1.Wash and cut the tomatoes into quarters.
2.Peel the garlic, c
ut the ginger and green chilli .
3.Add the tomatoes, garlic, ginger and green chilli, along with water to a pan. Let simmer until the tomatoes are blanched. Let cool.
4.Now, blitz the cooled mixture and strain it into a bowl.
5.Next add coconut milk and salt to taste.
6.To make the tempering, heat oil in a large pan and add cumin seeds. Once they pop, add the curry leaves and asafoetida. Then add the tomato mixture and bring it all to a boil.
Serve hot.

The recipe gives ~400 calories
